Session: The impact and opportunities for the fully circular urban water cycle

Theme: Energy transition and resource recovery
    Organiser: KWR, STOWA/ EFGF, Aquaminerals

What is the impact and what are the opportunities of a fully circular urban water cycle? The Netherlands has the aim to create a national fully circular economy by 2050. Also Europe has Circular Economy ambitions as do several other countries/regions in the world. We made an overview of current incoming and outgoing materials (water, energy and components) in the Dutch water cycle. However, how does a fully circular urban water cycle look like in 2050? A circular system integration is needed. Our insight, ideas and vision will be presented and discussed with the audience. After inspirational presentations the audience will be included in discussions about dilemmas and choices for a fully circular urban water cycle in the (near) future. We will generate insights into where action is needed to bring about, or increase, circularity, and what the consequences might be. In achieving our objective, we engage in a variety of activities: we reveal the nature of all the current incoming and outgoing material streams in the urban water cycle; concretise the spot on the horizon: What does ‘fully circular in2050’ mean for the urban water cycle?; clarify the short-and long-term implications, opportunities, obstacles and risks related to achieving a fully circular urban watercycle in 2050, and the measures and actions required to get there.
