Smart sewer system capacity optimisation with the use of dynamic controls, hydraulic modelling and artificial intelligence (neural networks) in South Bend, USA.

Blue infrastructure (BLU-X) refers to all information technologies that improve and empower the understanding and control of urban water systems. BLU-X is a cloud based intelligent urban water system platform, designed and built to evoke 10X improvements in performance and resiliency from legacy infrastructure. Moreover, BLU-X is otherwise hardware and software agnostic – able to connect to any sensor, telemetry, SCADA, GIS and hydraulic/hydrological modelling platform on the market today. BLU-X brings together and harnesses the power of the Internet of Things, Big Data Analytics and Machine Learning to unlock unprecedented performance opportunities across urban watersheds. Clients often cite between 5X and 20X return on investment (and occasionally up to 100X) from using BLU-X. BLU-X was launched to accelerate the proliferation of Smart Water technologies, specifically real time condition-based maintenance and globally optimal coordinated real time control of green and grey infrastructure. BLU-X mitigates sanitary and storm water challenges, reduces overflows and basement backups and increases operators’ agency over the infrastructure they are charged with managing.

Predictive intelligence for smart water management

HAL24K smart water management solutions consist of AI models that can help better understand the water system and predict events, ranging from water levels, the concentration of chemical/organic compounds or the operational state of crucial pumps and machines. We combine customer and third-party data to build such predictive models that connect to key performance indicators for the most challenging business cases. We will present a number of solutions for smart water management and demonstrate how we maximise the value and success of AI by making it user-friendly and available throughout client operations, every day.

Platform and information suite to optimise water management in Brasil

Access to water is a global problem, due to an increasing number of water users and limitations related to the availability of fresh water. Smart ways of water management are therefore key to enable stakeholders’ access to water. A prerequisite for water management is accurate and reliable information concerning water and water risks. In recent years, technologies related to satellite Earth observation have taken a boost, and the number of (open) data sources has increased tremendously. Users have indicated that a system is needed that integrates all relevant remotely-sensed (satellite) data, locally-sensed (sensor) data and external data sources into meaningful information related to water. 52impact has developed 360blue to that purpose, and has implemented 360blue in the Belo Horizonte region (Brasil).

360blue is an information and software suite to support optimization of water management. The service combines satellite Earth observation combined with other data sources. The information is translated into meaningful indicators related to water management, vegetation (e.g. agriculture), and integrated landscape management. The information is presented within an easy to understand online dashboard.

            Water security in Belo Horizonte

Belo Horizonte is the 6th-largest city in Brazil – population 2.5 million. All the water used for the supply of the city is surface water from two watersheds. These watersheds are threatened by development and poor agricultural practices. The metropolis suffers from frequent flooding, exacerbated by the illegal occupation of certain areas. The squatters also contribute to the high level of untreated sewage (25%). Even without the effects of climate change, the city will struggle to provide sufficient water for economic growth and conflicts between users have already occurred. Without action, the situation will deteriorate in the coming decades.
